Hola folks! `lemontea bringing you this news update. It appears that the VBU has definitely been getting less attention than it deserves. I assure you once again that the VBU is not dead. Our motto reads that we're the serious vector club. I think it's about time we acted like it. However, I appear to be the only administrator that is actually updating the site. And because we continue to grow, an important question is definitely coming up. How do you manage a community this large? Well, first we need more staff that are dedicated to helping the community. This is why I am requesting applications from prospective Deviants:

If you haven't heard of *meralis, you're probably not alone, unfortunately. However, *meralis is one of the true innovators of vector art. Her total lead in the Project 8: Abstracts contest may have given her some spotlight, but she definitely deserves this feature and more.

Merging the interesting styles of popular vector art, her sheer talent, and influences from traditional art, *meralis has proven to be an artist that is painfully overlooked without reason. Don't miss the chance to pay her outstanding gallery a visit. Below are just a few samples of her unique vectoring styles.



Featured Interview
VBU: What made you want to get into vector art?
*meralis: *sits back and thinks about it a minute* Well, by profession I'm a Graphic Artist (a lot more commercial than anything I submit to deviantART) and was my way of expressing myself yet also practicing the skills I use at work. Just seemed more natural to me.

VBU: How did you come to develop such a unique style?
*meralis: Seriously, it started with a doodle. LOL In my college classes depending on the lectures I would have a hard time focusing on the lecture and would start to doodle on the back of my notebooks. One day in Biology I noticed Element emerging out of nowhere and decided to convert it to vector when I got home. I started to really love the style, and started working on honing it. I believe it was subconciously inspired by the old wood block art, and japenese paper craft, but with my own little twist on it.

VBU: What do you plan to do in the future with your art?
*meralis: Well, in my very little free time, I have been trying to get my work into some art showings in my community and I really hope to get a chance for it to really take off. However, as much as I would love to see my art well known, I do this more for myself to express all the things going on in my head and heart. I think it would be fun to take commisions, but I do hope more that people can connect to my personal pieces more. Every once in a while, my art shows up in my commercial work as well.

I also plan on trying new styles and new mediums, but probably not until I get a little more free time. I doubt I will ever abandon vector however. It's much too fun for me.

We would like to again thank *meralis not only for her stunning piece that won the Project 8: Abstracts, but also for sharing her art and sunny disposition with the community! This is one artist that we can't wait to see more from!

[ ILLUSTRATOR TIP ]

 Trying to save an .AI or .EPS file in Adobe's new version of Illustrator CS as an older file version, but the old 'save as...' method is not working?
Go to 'File > Export', choose your filename and location, then a prompt will come up like in version 9 and 10 that will let you choose what version to save your file as and other specifictations.
